Festival to Celebrate Lackawanna Railroad’s Anniversary

NEWARK, NJ, July 25, 2001 -- Space is available for vendors interested in selling quality goods and foods at NJ TRANSIT’s 22nd annual Try Transit Festival at Hoboken this September.

The festival -- which will be held Saturday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public -- has traditionally drawn tens of thousands of people. NJ TRANSIT is interested in attracting vendors who sell items such as arts & crafts, international foods, railroadiana and other souvenirs.

This year’s Try Transit Festival includes a celebration of the Lackawanna Railroad's 150th anniversary. Founded in 1851, the Lackawanna Railroad operated primarily along what today is NJ TRANSIT’s Morris & Essex Lines. The Lackawanna Railroad merged with the Erie Railroad in 1960 to form the Erie-Lackwanna Railroad. NJ TRANSIT absorbed both railroad's lines when it began operating rail service on January 1, 1983.

The Festival's schedule includes displays of historic, current and future rail, light rail and bus equipment, as well as the popular Wild West Train Ride. The festival will provide a fun day for the entire family with games — including laser tag — rides, face painters, clowns, musical entertainment, food and craft vendors.

NJ TRANSIT Police also will photograph children at their mobile command center as part of the IDENT‑A‑KID program. The program provides parents free pictures of their children at no charge. The pictures can be used by police to help find a child who is lost or has been reported missing.
