By Rail

If you have a monthly rail pass valued at $67 or more, you can use it on any NJ TRANSIT light rail line or buses up to the number of zones indicated on your pass. Simply show your valid rail pass to the bus operator or light rail fare inspector.

By Light Rail

The Newark Light Rail, formerly the Newark City Subway, is the primary way to move between Newark Penn Station and Newark Broad Street Station, and onward through the Central and North Wards. Whether you're heading to Branch Brook Park, catching a show at NJPAC, or connecting from one rail station to the other, the Light Rail is the fastest option once you're in the city.

Prudential Center

Home to the New Jersey Devils and one of the busiest arenas in the country — concerts, sports, and major events year-round.

Getting there: Walk 10 minutes from Newark Penn Station

NJPAC — New Jersey Performing Arts Center

The state's premier performing arts venue, hosting orchestral performances, Broadway productions, jazz, and international artists.

Getting there: Walk 5 minutes from Newark Penn Station, or take the Newark Light Rail to NJPAC/Center Street station.

The Ironbound & Ferry Street

Newark's most beloved dining district — a dense stretch of Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish restaurants, bakeries, and markets that draws visitors from across the region.

Getting there: Exit Newark Penn Station via the Ferry Street exit and walk straight in. No transfer needed.

Newark Museum of Art

One of the largest art museums in the Northeast, with a permanent collection spanning ancient to contemporary — including a Tibetan altar recognized by the Dalai Lama.

Getting there: From Newark Penn Station, take the Newark Light Rail to Washington Street station or board local buses toward Washington Street.

Branch Brook Park

America's first county park, and home to the largest collection of Japanese cherry blossom trees in the country — surpassing the famous display in Washington, D.C.

Getting there: Take the Newark Light Rail to Branch Brook Park station. Alternatively, arrive at Newark Broad Street Station and connect via local bus.

Military Park

A renovated downtown green space at the center of Newark's civic and cultural life — outdoor events, food vendors, and a gateway to the surrounding arts district.

Getting there: Walk 5 minutes from Newark Penn Station, or take the Newark Light Rail to Military Park station.

Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the United States, modeled after the Cathedral of Reims in France — a landmark of extraordinary scale and architectural detail.

Getting there: Take the Newark Light Rail to Park Avenue station and take a short walk. The 41 and 99 buses go past the Cathedral. 

Newark Symphony Hall

A National Historic Landmark and one of Newark's oldest cultural institutions, hosting concerts, theatrical productions, and community events since 1925.

Getting there: From Newark Penn Station, board a local bus toward Broad Street, or take the Newark Light Rail to Broad Street Station and walk south.

University Heights

Newark's academic district, home to Rutgers University–Newark, NJIT, and Essex County College — a hub of research, culture, and campus life in the heart of the city.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Tickets required in advance — NJ TRANSIT matchday rail tickets are now available through the Mobile App at a flat rate of $105 per person (round-trip). They will not be sold at stations or on board.
  • Capacity is limited — Up to 40,000 fans are served per matchday; tickets may sell out.
  • Wristband required both ways — An official NJ TRANSIT Matchday Wristband is issued at ticket inspection and required to board inbound and return service. No Wristband, No Ride.
  • Service starts 4 hours before kickoff and runs for approximately 3 hours after the match.
