NJ "TRANSIT SHOPPE" OPENS FOR BUSINESS

Clothing, Model Trains, Videos, Collectibles Among Featured Items

NEWARK, NJ, November 19, 2001 -- Looking for a gift for the holidays? How about that train set or trolley car you can never find in the model train shops? Is your child in love with Thomas the Tank Engine? Are you a model bus collector?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you can find what you need -- and more -- at the Transit Shoppe store, the newest outlet for NJ TRANSIT merchandise and other toys and collectible items. The Transit Shoppe store -- which opened November 9 -- is located on the second floor of Newark Penn Station at the entrance of the Gateway Center pedestrian bridge.

"What child hasn't enjoyed a model train? How many of us remember our first electric train set for the holidays? And how many had miniature buses mixed in with their Matchbox car collection? Now you can take home memories for your children from the Transit Shoppe store," said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh. "The store expands on the Transit Shoppe's successful internet presence, selling toys, shirts, hats, business portfolios, collectibles and railroadiana to customers and fans alike."

Among the items featured at the Transit Shoppe are:

  • Models of NJ TRANSIT locomotives, rail cars, buses, light rail vehicles and support vehicles.
  • Books about railroading and mass transportation for adults and children.
  • Toys, including the popular "Thomas the Tank Engine" line.
  • Clothing, including hats, t-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts.
  • Accessories such as briefcases, pens and watches.
  • Videos showing important events in NJ TRANSIT history.
  • Commemorative items and railroadiana.

The 550-square foot store features a two track train layout attached to the ceiling. As customers shop, replicas of NJ TRANSIT trains circle the track above them, railroad videos play on three televisions and the sounds of lively railroad music eminate from overhead speakers.

The Transit Shoppe is open weekdays (except holidays) from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. In addition to the store, customers may continue to use the online Transit Shoppe site (http://www.njtransit.com/an_transitshop.jsp).

NJ TRANSIT is the nation's largest statewide public transportation system providing bus, rail and light rail services for 380,600 daily commuters on 240 bus routes, two light rail lines and 12 commuter rail lines. It is the third largest transit system in the country with 163 rail stations, 26 light rail stations and more than 17,000 bus stops linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia.
