NEWARK, NJ ¿ The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT will host a public scoping meeting tomorrow evening to address possible replacement or enhancement of Amtrak Portal Bridge, the two-track moveable swing-span bridge that carries the Northeast Corridor over the Hackensack River.

At 96 years old, the Portal Bridge is nearing the end of its useful life and has insufficient capacity to accommodate future transportation needs. The project will evaluate alternatives to improve reliability and increase the capacity of the crossing.

The public scoping meeting will give the public an opportunity to review and comment on various alternatives and issues regarding the proposed enhancement project.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Newark Public Library, 5 Washington Street, Centennial Hall, 2nd Floor. Presentations will be given at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
