NJ TRANSIT UNVEILS DECORATED TRAIN CARS, BUSES AND LIGHT RAIL VEHICLES FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Special Holiday Fleet Will Run Throughout December on Select Trains, Newark Light Rail and Bus Routes Statewide; Coincides with the Release of a New “How to Ride” Online Resource to Assist New Customers

NEWARK, NJ – NJ TRANSIT customers may find their train, bus or light rail vehicle is decked out in festive holiday decorations this season.  The agency has unveiled a fleet of decorated train cars, buses, and Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) to wish Happy Holidays to customers statewide. This special holiday fleet will be in service throughout December, providing customers with tidings of joy! The holidays typically see many new customers traveling across the region, so NJ TRANSIT has also launched a new “How to Ride” online guide to assist customers utilizing NJ TRANSIT services.

“NJ TRANSIT embraces the holiday season as an opportunity to foster a sense of warmth and good will,” said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “The new holiday fleet conveys our heartfelt wishes for a happy holiday season, while the ‘How to Ride’ guide will offer essential information for new and seasoned customers to make their travel experience a seamless one.”  

“It is our hope that this special holiday fleet will remind us of the spirit of the holiday season and can brighten the day of our customers who may ride it on a particular day,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “Our new ‘How to Ride’ guide empowers all of our customers, new and experienced, with the knowledge they need to navigate our services.”

The holiday fleet consists of three decorated train cars, two buses and one light rail car set, which will be in service until January 2, 2024. Two of the train cars operate across lines in North Jersey, while the third car runs on the Atlantic City Rail Line. One of the buses is operating on routes in North Jersey, while the second one is in South Jersey. Additionally, there is one decorated light rail car set in service on the Newark Light Rail.

The “How to Ride” guide, now available here, guides prospective travelers through the basics of using NJ TRANSIT services, offers step-by-step information for new customers looking to plan a trip, and provides tips and guidance for seasoned customers looking to make their experience even more enjoyable and efficient. The guide is segmented into three sections organized by mode of travel – Train (Rail), Bus, or Light Rail – and has an interactive feel with different options appearing depending on the mode of travel or payment that an individual selects.

Each section consists of five tabs, comprised of text and video, containing information on trip planning, purchasing tickets, and specifics regarding onboard policies, procedures, and safety tips. The five tabs in each section include:

  • How to Plan Your Trip – Visitors will learn how to find the precise locations of stations they are traveling to and from, their proximity to their home and their destination. After locating stations, a timetable brochure snippet will be available to teach riders how to read the schedule for trains, buses or light rail vehicles.

  • How to Buy Your Ticket – Informational text and videos will detail the process of purchasing tickets via five different methods:
    • Mobile App
    • Ticket Vending Machine (TVM)
    • Ticket Office
    • Web Ticketing
    • Commissioned Ticket Agents (CTA)

Information on ticket options and discounts will also be available.

  • Know Before You Go – Information on parking near the station, alerts regarding the timeliness of trains, buses, or light rail and features such as DepartureVision, which can send alerts in real-time as you approach your destination, are all available on this tab. Also included are:
    • Station Amenities
    • Alternatives, Backups, and Contingency plans (ABCs)
    • Information on Accessibility (for those with mobility impairments) at specific stations

  • Onboard Your Ride – This tab contains information regarding onboard policies, procedures, and safety tips that must be followed by all customers to foster a safe trip while remaining courteous with fellow riders, NJ TRANSIT staffers, and remaining in compliance with local laws.
     
  • What’s Next? – Information on safety procedures when exiting the train, bus, or Light rail. Reminders to check for any items left behind, information on reporting items to Lost & Found, and information on local taxi and rideshare services are all available on this tab.
