Savings on travel to school for Elementary, Middle and High School Students

Student Bus Tickets (one-way and transfer)

Elementary and secondary school students (through 12th grade) may travel for 33% off the adult one-way and transfer fares. Student tickets and transfers are valid for travel to and from all bus stops within the state of New Jersey. Student tickets are for the personal use of the authorized student only. To be eligible for this discount, students must reside in New Jersey and attend a public or accredited private or parochial school in New Jersey.

Students must buy their one-way tickets before boarding the bus or obtain them from their school before travel. Student tickets cannot be purchased aboard the bus. When purchasing one-way tickets, students must present a properly completed NJ TRANSIT Student Identification card issued by appropriate school authorities. Student tickets, sold ten at one-time, are available for purchase at most bus garages and major terminals, and sales are limited to not more than six sets of 10 student tickets of the same denomination to a student. Student tickets also are sold to Boards of Education and other appropriate school authorities on application to NJ TRANSIT.

The student must present a valid NJ TRANSIT Student Identification card upon request by NJ TRANSIT personnel. Transfers are available to student ticket passengers for a continuous ride utilizing a second bus for a one-zone ride. A student presenting a transfer traveling more than one-zone will be charged the applicable override fare.

Student Light Rail Tickets (Hudson Bergen Light Rail, Newark Light Rail, River LINE)

Students who reside in New Jersey and attend elementary or secondary school (through 12th grade) located in New Jersey may travel at a 25% discount off adult one-way light rail fares for travel to and from school.

Student tickets cannot be purchased from light rail station Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs). Students should obtain these tickets from their school before they travel. Student tickets are valid 24 hours daily, for travel within the light rail service line (Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, or Newark Light Rail or River Line stations). (This does not include school field trips, which leave the school with supervisory personnel.)

These tickets are for the personal use of the student who purchased them or received them from the school he/she attends. When requested, a student must present a properly completed NJ TRANSIT Student Identification Card issued by appropriate school authorities for examination by Fare Enforcement Officers or other representatives of NJ TRANSIT.
