Travel Tips for NJ TRANSIT Rail Customers Using Newark Liberty International Airport’s New Terminal A

NJ TRANSIT provides rail service to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), including the recently opened Terminal A, which serves Air Canada, American Airlines, jetBlue and United Airlines.

NJ TRANSIT service is via the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line to Newark Liberty International Airport (NLIA) Station, where connecting service is available on the EWR AirTrain.

Tickets

We highly recommend that you purchase roundtrip NJ TRANSIT rail tickets to NLIA Station in advance. The easiest way to do that is through the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, available for download here. Rail tickets are also available at Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) or from ticket agents at NJ TRANSIT rail stations. Purchasing tickets to/from NLIA Station includes both your NJ TRANSIT train ride to NLIA, and your travel on the AirTrain.

Train Service

Once you arrive at NLIA station, take your NJ TRANSIT ticket with you to pass through the faregates and board the AirTrain. Terminal A customers have a new AirTrain drop-off location at the airport. Please allow extra time for this new travel path, which includes a short shuttle bus ride or about a 15-minute walk to the new terminal entrance where you can access any of the airline departure gates at Terminal A. Look for the direction signs to the terminal when you exit the AirTrain at the Terminal A drop-off.

For airline customers arriving at Terminal A, gather your luggage before departing the terminal enroute to NJ TRANSIT rail service. First, take a shuttle bus (exit at the Terminal A lower level and look for the AirTrain shuttle bus at pickup location 15), or walk about 15 minutes from the Terminal A entrance to the AirTrain for service to NLIA Station. While NJ TRANSIT rail/AirTrain tickets are not available for purchase at Terminal A, you do not require a ticket to ride the AirTrain from Terminal A to NLIA Station. Once you arrive at the rail station, if you do not have a NJ TRANSIT ticket to pass through the faregates, purchase one at any of the TVMs at NLIA Station (roundtrip tickets are recommended if you are returning to the airport at a later date). Then, pass through the faregate before boarding your NJ TRANSIT train to your destination.
