The COVID-19 response efforts by NJTRANSIT are constantly evolving and being enhanced to remain consistent with federal and state health recommendations to ensure the health and safety of our employees and customers still using the system for essential travel.

Executive Order 125 requires NJ TRANSIT to limit occupancy by passengers to 50 percent of the stated maximum vehicle capacity on all buses, trains and light rail vehicles, in addition to the requirement for customers and personnel onboard vehicles to wear a face covering at all times.

If you have to travel for essential purposes only, allow extra time getting to and from your destination, and listen closely to public address announcements at stations for late-breaking service information.


Beginning Monday, April 20, NJ TRANSIT has added extra trips to certain bus routes, creating a modified service level to support essential travel and adding capacity to further help social distancing on board buses to comply with Governor Murphy’s Executive Order 125.

Travel should be limited to essential purposes only.

As an added precautionary measure to protect bus operators and customers, NJ TRANSIT has implemented rear-door boarding on all bus routes where rear-boarding is available. Seats near the bus operator have been taken out of service to allow for proper social distancing for the operator.

Please use the NJ TRANSIT app or a TVM to purchase tickets prior to boarding to limit cash transactions with the bus operator.


Rail is operating weekday service on a Presidents Day schedule with enhancements.

Schedule enhancements include:

  • Raritan Valley Line (RVL) service to/from High Bridge, and service to/from Hackettstown.
  • Additional stops at Teterboro, Woodcliff Lake, Avenel, Garwood and North Elizabeth Stations
  • Pascack Valley Line (PVL) rail service is on a special weekday schedule to accommodate added stops at Teterboro and Woodcliff Lake.
  • Additional early morning trains on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) and the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL).
  • Montclair-Boonton Line service west of Bay St. and Gladstone Branch rail service will both operate on weekdays only.  Gladstone Branch substitute bus service will continue to operate on weekends.

Important Note: The Presidents Day schedule does NOT include service at Jersey Ave. Station


Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) – The HBLR is operating on a weekend schedule to accommodate essential travel due to the decline in ridership related to COVID-19. The weekend HBLR schedule operates service approximately every 20 minutes.

NJ TRANSIT will be utilizing the multi-set light rail vehicles whenever possible to provide the largest passenger capacity available, allowing our customers to practice social distancing.

Newark Light Rail weekday service is operating on a SATURDAY schedule

RiverLINE weekday service is operating on a SUNDAY/HOLIDAY schedule


All rides taken at this time should be ESSENTIAL TRAVEL ONLY - such as to the doctor, work, grocery store, dialysis, laundromat, pharmacy, or other critical destinations. If your ride is not essential or you are ill, please stay home.

Access Link Operations hours for status and cancellation continue to be from 5am to 10pm. Access Link continues to be reachable with staff working both on-site and from remote locations. Continue to check the operating hours of your destinations before you schedule your trip.
