At NJ TRANSIT, our Locomotive Engineers and Assistant Conductors are the driving force behind our commitment to safety and exceptional customer experience. We offer robust training programs designed not only to propel career growth but also to ensure that the highest safety standards are woven into the very fabric of the communities we serve

Assistant Conductor Training Program
Assistant Conductors possess a customer service mindset and the ability to effectively communicate with the public, crew, engineers, yard personnel, and railroad officials. The Assistant Conductor role provides the opportunity to take leadership while working in a team environment. They are responsible for the safe movement of the train by adhering to strict safety rules applicable to operating rules/practices.

Locomotive Engineer Training Program
As a Locomotive Engineer, you’ll join the ranks of the most trained and skilled of all rail workforces. You’ll control equipment that is complex and powerful and bear responsibility for the safety of others. It involves the operation of locomotives, performing pre-trip inspections and tests, monitoring track conditions during runs, controlling train speed by throttle adjustment and brake application, and ensuring the safety of passengers and equipment.
NJ TRANSIT Rail Operations is the iron thread that moves the regional economy.
Our committed team of Conductors, Assistant Conductors, Locomotive Engineers, Electricians, Laborers, and other rail experts oversee more than 500 miles of track, 166 rail stations, and 16 rail yards, helping provide nearly 90 million passenger trips each year.

The new system enhanced rail safety by placing an additional layer of protection to prevent trains from operating overspeed, passing stop signals and further reducing the possibility of collisions through monitoring and controlling train movements.
At NJ TRANSIT, diversity and inclusivity are vital to our success as we are committed to hiring individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and veteran status. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we encourage all qualified applicants to apply and join our team.
