NJ TRANSIT SUPPORTS NATIONAL “SEE TRACKS? THINK TRAIN” WEEK

Annual Observance Highlights Safety Precautions Near Tracks and Grade Crossings

NEWARK, NJ – NJ TRANSIT is observing national “See Tracks? Think Train Week” from September 21 to 27 by reminding customers, drivers and pedestrians of the best ways to stay safe near railroad tracks. The effort is part of a national campaign by Operation Lifesaver with different safety reminders each day of the week that can be used throughout the year.

"We maintain fencing, warning signs, crossing gates, and variable message signs across more than 500 miles of track, but safety near a railroad ultimately depends on the choices people make," said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri. "See Tracks? Think Train Week is a chance to remind every customer, resident, driver, and pedestrian to stay alert, obey signs and signals, and cross only at designated areas."

See Tracks? Think Train® Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) is a concentrated week of rail safety education focused on the importance of making safe choices when driving, biking, or walking near railroad tracks and trains. First held in the U.S. in 2017, this is a collaborative effort among Operation Lifesaver, Inc., State Operation Lifesaver Programs and rail safety partners like NJ TRANSIT.

Each day will have a specific theme in support of See Tracks? Think Train Week. NJ TRANSIT will be supporting the week with safety blitzes at select stations where Safety employees interact with customers to remind them of safe procedures as well as systemwide social media messaging reminding customers of critical safety tips. Some important safety practices when near railroad tracks are:

•           No trespassing

•           Stay alert

•           Obey signs and signals

•           Cross at designated areas only

•           Stand behind the yellow safety line on station platforms

Throughout the statewide rail system, which includes more than 500 miles of track and 366 public grade crossings, NJ TRANSIT has deployed and maintains various safety mechanisms including right of way fencing, variable message signs, warning signs and bi-lingual “no trespassing” signs.
