SOLAR
NJ TRANSIT is committed to advancing distributed energy generation throughout its service area and is investigating NJ TRANSIT owned properties to host renewable energy, such as solar. Increasing solar will allow NJ TRANSIT to power more of its facilities from clean energy and can provide resilient power during emergencies, while simultaneously reducing GHG emissions and greatly improving local air quality in those communities and neighborhoods that border our facilities.
NJ TRANSIT has a 683 kilowatt (kWDC) solar PV array installed on the rooftop of is Meadows Maintenance Complex (MMC) in Kearney. In 2019 the array produced about 734,000 kWh total. This amount serves roughly 4.3% of the 538,00 square foot building annual power need and equals enough to power about 67 homes a year. At the end of 2019 the array has saved a cumulative total of 3,917,200 kWh in avoided energy consumption or 1,467 metric tons of CO2e emissions from being released since being installed. This is equivalent to 318 passenger vehicles on the road each year.

NJ TRANSIT uses AlsoEnergy to track and manage the MMC’s solar PV system performance. The figure below shows the typical monthly kWh output of the solar PV system. As you can see the electricity generated varies by each month because of the amount of sunlight available in New Jersey over the course of a year.
