Take the train to Far Hills October 28 to avoid traffic and parking fees

NEWARK, NJ - The ponies will be running in Far Hills on Saturday, October 28, and so too will NJ TRANSIT's iron horses, to carry thousands of spectators to and from the 86th annual Far Hills Steeplechase at Mooreland Farms. NJ TRANSIT will offer extra train service between New York, Hoboken and Far Hills to accommodate the thousands of spectators expected to turn out for the event.

The train is the best way to reach the races without worrying about traffic, tolls and parking hassles. NJ TRANSIT provides direct rail service to Far Hills from Hoboken Terminal and Summit, and convenient connecting service from New York Penn Station.

Far Hills Station is located directly across the street from Mooreland Farms. The trip from Hoboken or New York takes approximately 90 minutes, with adult round-trip adult fares of $13.25 from Hoboken and $18 from New York.

Rail Service to Far Hills (from New York, Hoboken or Summit)

 

  • From Hoboken: Between 8:05 a.m. and 12:05 p.m., NJ TRANSIT will operate 12 trains from Hoboken Terminal to Far Hills Station.
  • From New York: Six regularly scheduled MidTOWN Direct trains will depart hourly from New York Penn Station to Summit Station between 7:11 a.m. and 12:11 p.m. Customers should transfer at Summit to continue their trip.
  • For the benefit of Morristown Line customers, an additional train will depart Summit at 10:19 a.m., making all stops to Far Hills.

Returning to Summit, New York or Hoboken

 

  • Twelve trains will depart Far Hills Station between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., making all stops to Hoboken Terminal. Trains will depart at 10-minute intervals, or as they fill up.
  • Customers traveling to New York should transfer at Summit Station. From Summit, six trains will depart for New York Penn Station between 4:42 p.m. and 7:42 p.m., including regularly scheduled MidTOWN DIRECT service.
  • For the benefit of customers returning to Dover or intermediate destinations on the Morristown Line, an additional train will depart Summit at 6:30 p.m. and make all stops except Mt. Tabor Station.

To accommodate special Steeplechase service, substitute bus service will be provided for customers traveling from Far Hills to Summit in the morning and from Summit to Far Hills Station in the late afternoon and early evening. Substitute bus service will also be provided between Far Hills and Gladstone stations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. NJ TRANSIT customer service representatives will be on hand to assist with the bus operation.

Customer Advice

 

  • To save time and money, use ticket vending machines at your boarding station to purchase a round-trip, off-peak ticket. (Tickets purchased aboard trains are subject to a $5 surcharge.)
  • Customers who purchase one-way tickets to Far Hills will be required to buy a special $5 ticket at Far Hills before boarding a train for their return trip. The ticket will be good for any destination until midnight.
  • Customers are reminded that NJ TRANSIT reserves the right to inspect all bags and packages.

About the event

Hailed as one of New Jersey's most 'be there' events, the Far Hills Race Meeting holds its 86th running on Saturday, October 28 at Moorland Farms in Far Hills. Six races, including the prestigious Breeders' Cup Grand National, begin at 1 p.m. Attracting over 50,000 spectators, Race Day is one of astounding horse racing, celebration, fun, fashion, and networking.

The event, on the rolling hills of Moorland Farms has as its highlight, the televised Breeders' Cup Grand National, which has the richest purse of the day at $250,000. There is $600,000 in total purses offered in six races. Far Hills Race Meeting offers the highest purses on the National Steeplechase Association circuit.

The Moorland Farms grounds open to the public at 8 a.m. on Race Day. Post time for the first race is 1 p.m. The Far Hills Race Meeting will be held rain or shine. General admission tickets prior to the day of the event are $50. Tickets and parking passes are available at local merchants (visit farhillsrace.org for a listing) through Oct. 27, while supplies last. On the day of the event, general admission is $100.
