NJ TRANSIT ADJUSTS BUS SCHEDULES TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE
NEWARK, NJ, June 13, 2002 -- NJ TRANSIT will revise schedules on a number of bus lines on Saturday, June 22, in response to changing travel patterns, as well as customer requests and recommendations. The Corporation regularly reviews its bus routes and makes changes to improve service.
Highlights of the service change include:
- The Newark City Subway extension will open June 22. Subway car service will be restored on weekends. As of June 21, the Heller Parkway Station will be closed. Customers are encouraged to obtain new schedules.
- On the No. 402 Pennsville-Philadelphia route, a weekday afternoon trip from Philadelphia to Pennsville via the Pureland Industrial Park will be added to provide expanded service from the industrial park to Salem County. Two afternoon trips will also be extended beyond Pureland Industrial Park to Pennsville.
- On the No. 600 Trenton-Plainsboro route, weekend service will be extended beyond downtown Trenton to the Trenton Train Station in response to customer requests.
- The No. 67 Toms River-Lakewood-Newark route will restore daily summer service to Seaside Heights and Seaside Park through Labor Day. One weekday trip that formally originated at Journal Square in Jersey City will now originate at Exchange Place.
- The No. 137 Toms River-New York route will restore summer service to Seaside Heights and Seaside Park for the summer season and will operate through Labor Day. Weekend service to/from Island Beach State Park will also be restored for the summer season.
Customers are encouraged to pick up new timetables at major terminals and on their buses and check them carefully to determine if their trip has changed.
Following are highlights of the June 22 bus schedule changes:
Atlantic County
- The No. 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May route will restore summer service. Customers should check their timetables carefully for specific trip times.
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 501 Atlantic City-Brigantine and No. 502 Atlantic City-Hamilton Mall-Atlantic/Cape Community College routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 508 Atlantic City-Richard Stockton College-Hamilton Mall route, service will be expanded to serve the Social Security Administration in Egg Harbor Township. No.502 Atlantic City-Hamilton Mall-Atlantic/Cape Community College will no longer serve the Social Security Administration. Minor trip time adjustments will also occur. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Bergen County
- On the No. 83 Journal Square-Hackensack route, Westside Avenue branch service will be restored along sections of the Bergen Turnpike, Union Turnpike and Westside Avenue in North Bergen.
- On the No. 156 Englewood Cliffs-New York route, trips currently operating via 48th Street in Union City and Pershing Road in Weehawken on Saturdays will be rerouted to operate via River Road in Weehawken and 60th Street in West New York due to the closing of the Pershing Road bridge in early July. These trips will continue to serve the Port Imperial-NY Waterway Ferry Terminal in Weehawken.
- Minor adjustments have been made on the No. 158 Fort Lee-Edgewater-New York route. Customer should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 159 Fort Lee-New York route, trips currently operating via 48th Street in Union City and Pershing Road in Weehawken on weekdays and Saturdays will be rerouted to operate via River Road in Weehawken and 60th Street in West New York due to the closing of the Pershing Road bridge in early July. These trips will continue to serve the Port Imperial-NY Waterway Ferry Terminal in Weehawken.
- Early getaway service from New York has been added on Friday afternoons on the No.163 Ridgewood-New York, No. 164 Midland-New York and No. 167 Harrington Park-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 171 Paterson-New York route, service during the peak and off-peak hours on weekdays and Saturdays will be adjusted to operate every 30-35 minutes.
- On the No. 178 Hackensack-New York route, weekday morning peak service will be increased from every 30-minutes to every 25-minutes. Weekday midday service will be changed to operate every hour instead of every half-hour due to low ridership. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 351 Meadowlands Sports Complex-New York route to New York, passengers boarding at the Continental Airlines Arena will now board buses outside of Gate C adjacent to Parking Lots 20 and 21.
- Minor service adjustments will occur on the No. 160 Elmwood Park-New York, No. 165 Westwood-New York, No. 182 Hackensack-New York and No. 186 Dumont-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Burlington County
- Minor adjustments have been made to the No. 406 Berlin-Marlton-Philadelphia route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Camden County
- Minor adjustments have been made on the No. 400 Sicklerville-Philadelphia, No. 406 Berlin-Marlton-Philadelphia, No. 451 Camden-Echelon Mall and No. 453 Camden-Ferry Avenue PATCO routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Cape May County
- On the No. 316 Philadelphia-Cape May Express route, summer service will be restored. No service will operate to Camden. Service via Ocean Drive will be reduced to three round trips per day due to low ridership.
- The No. 319 New York-Atlantic City-Cape May route will restore summer service. Customers should check their timetables carefully for specific trip times.
Essex County
- The Newark City Subway extension will open June 22. Subway car service will be restored on weekends. As of June 21, the Heller Parkway Station will be closed. Customers are encouraged to obtain new schedules.
- Major schedule revisions will occur on the No. 62 Newark-Woodbridge-Perth Amboy route, especially between Newark, Newark International Airport and Elizabeth. Schedule changes and additional trips are designed to alleviate overcrowding, especially for Newark Airport employees and others traveling to and from the airport.
- Minor weekday changes will occur on the No. 70 Newark-Livingston Mall route. Customers should check their timetables carefully. These changes will take effect on June 29.
- On the No. 979 Irvington-Raritan Center route, the last trip from Raritan Center will be discontinued due to low ridership. Passengers can take the No. 978 at the same time to Newark and transfer to one of the many bus routes connecting Newark and Irvington.
Gloucester County
- On the No. 402 Pennsville-Philadelphia route, a weekday afternoon trip from Philadelphia to Pennsville via the Pureland Industrial Park will be added to provide expanded service from the industrial park to Salem County. Two afternoon trips will also be extended beyond Pureland Industrial Park to Pennsville, eliminating service to Pedricktown due to low ridership. Minor adjustments will occur on the Sunday schedule. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 403 Tunersville-Lindenwold-Philadelphia route, a Saturday evening trip will be added for the summer season from Clementon Park to Philadelphia when the park closes for the night.
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 463 Woodbury-Avandale route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Hudson County
- On the No. 83 Journal Square-Hackensack route, Westside Avenue branch service will be restored along sections of Bergen Turnpike, Union Turnpike and Westside Avenue in North Bergen.
- On the No. 85 Hoboken-Harmon Meadow-Mill Creek route, service will be restored along sections of Bergen Turnpike and Union Turnpike in North Bergen.On the No. 121 North Bergen-New York route, service will be restored along sections of Bergen Turnpike, Union Turnpike and Westside Avenue in North Bergen.

Mercer County
- On the No. 600 Trenton-Plainsboro route, weekend service will be extended beyond downtown Trenton to the Trenton Train Station in response to customer requests.
- On the No. 605 Montgomery-Princeton-Quaker Bridge Mall route, service to Mercer Mall will be eliminated due to the K-Mart closing and low ridership.
Middlesex County
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 134 Browntown-Lower Manhattan and No. 139 Lakewood-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 600 Trenton-Plainsboro route, weekend service will be extended beyond downtown Trenton to the Trenton Train Station in response to customer requests.
Monmouth County
- Minor changes will occur on the No. 139 Lakewood-New York route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- Schedule adjustments will be made on the No. 307 Freehold-Six Flags Great Adventure route to operate later to match the parks operating hours. Customers should check timetables carefully.
- On the No. 833 Red Bank-Freehold route, service to the Luftman Towers in Lincroft will be eliminated due to requests by local officials. Service from the towers will be available via a bus stop on Newman Springs Road.
Ocean County
- The No. 67 Toms River-Lakewood-Newark route will restore daily summer service to Seaside Heights and Seaside Park through Labor Day. One weekday trip that formally originated at Journal Square in Jersey City will now originate at Exchange Place.
- The No. 137 Toms River-New York route will restore summer service to Seaside Heights and Seaside Park for the summer season and will operate through Labor Day. Weekend service to/from Island Beach State Park will also be restored for the summer season.

Passaic County
- On the No. 171 Paterson-New York route, service during the peak and off-peak hours on weekdays and Saturdays will be adjusted to operate every 30-35 minutes. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- Early getaway service from New York has been added on Friday afternoons during the summer on the No. 192 Clifton-New York and No. 193 Willowbrook-New York routes. Customers should check their timetables carefully for departure times.
- On the No. 193 Willowbrook-New York and No. 194 Newfoundland-New York routes, schedule adjustments will be made on trips operating via the Willowbrook and Wayne-Route 23 Park-Ride in Wayne. Customers should check their timetable carefully.
- Minor service adjustments will occur on the No. 196 Warwick-New York Express route. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
- On the No. 197 Warwick-New York route, additional Sunday service will be added between Pompton Lakes, Wayne and New York for the summer. Customers should check their timetables carefully for new departure times.
- On the No. 704 Paterson-Willowbrook Mall route, the last Saturday trip leaving Willowbrook Mall at 9:40 p.m. will be extended to 26th Street and 6th Avenue in Paterson.
Salem County
- On the No. 402 Pennsville-Philadelphia route, a weekday afternoon trip from Philadelphia to Pennsville via the Pureland Industrial Park will be added to provide expanded service from the industrial park to Salem County. Two afternoon trips will also be extended beyond Pureland Industrial Park to Pennsville, eliminating service to Pedricktown due to low ridership. Minor adjustments will occur on the Sunday schedule. - On the No. 468 Penns Grove-Salem-Woodstown route, a morning trip has been added from the Salem Shopping Center to Penns Grove to provide connections with the No. 402 route at the Ames Shopping Center in Pennsville to provide improved access to the Pureland Industrial Park in Logan Township. Additional minor changes will occur. Customers should check their timetables carefully.
Union County
- On the No. 59 Plainfield-Newark route, the Sunday morning 6:10 a.m. trip from Hillside to Westfield will operate five minutes earlier and will be extended to Broad and Elm Streets in Westfield.
- Major schedule revisions will occur on the No. 62 Newark-Woodbridge-Perth Amboy route, especially between Newark, Newark International Airport and Elizabeth. Schedule changes and additional trips are designed to alleviate overcrowding, especially for Newark Airport employees and others traveling to and from the airport.
