NJ TRANSIT ADDS ANOTHER TRAIN TO EVENING RUSH HOUR

New York Penn Station Departure Highlights October 27 Rail Schedule Changes for Northeast Corridor, MidTOWN DIRECT and North Jersey Coast Line Trains

NEWARK, NJ, October 24, 2002 – As part of NJ TRANSIT’s continued commitment to add capacity and improve service, the Corporation next week will add another evening peak period train departing Penn Station New York on the Northeast Corridor. Effective Monday, October 27, Train No. 3965 – an express train with nearly 1,200 seats departing Penn Station New York at 5:42 p.m. – will make stops at Newark Penn Station, Princeton Junction and Hamilton before completing its journey at Trenton Station at 6:51 p.m.

Additionally, NJ TRANSIT will add cars to four morning peak period trains (two MidTOWN DIRECT and two Northeast Corridor) and four evening peak period trains (one MidTOWN DIRECT, two Northeast Corridor and one North Jersey Coast Line), garnering another 1,700 seats on trains traveling between Newark and New York.

“Making more room for commuters and keeping the trains on schedule is central to NJ TRANSIT’s renewed emphasis on basic customer service, and will go a long way in offering a viable and welcome alternative to driving,” said Board Chairman and Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox.

“This new train – and our plan to add cars to existing trains – is part of Governor James McGreevey’s pledge to add capacity and reduce standees on the NJ TRANSIT rail system,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director George D. Warrington. “I especially want to thank Amtrak for helping us implement these schedule changes on the busiest railroad in America. As we continue to add more trains, customers are advised to watch their timetables closely for schedule adjustments that may affect their daily trip.”

The addition of Train No. 3965 will alter the departure times of other trains departing Penn Station New York between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. by an average of 1-3 minutes. Train No. 3725 will depart New York five minutes earlier (from 5:12 p.m. to 5:07 p.m.), and Amtrak Train Clocker No. 629 – which also carries NJ TRANSIT passengers – will depart New York nine minutes earlier (from 5:42 p.m. to 5:33 p.m.). All Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line passengers are advised to check their timetables closely for schedule changes and new travel opportunities.

A.M. Peak

  • Train No. 6406 (two more cars) – departing Peapack at 6:20 a.m. and arriving in New York at 7:37 a.m.
  • Train No. 3816 (two more cars) – departing Trenton at 6:21 a.m. and arriving in New York at 7:34 a.m.
  • Train No. 6616 (one more car) – departing Dover at 6:57 a.m. and arriving in New York at 8:15 a.m.
  • Train No. 3790 (two more cars) – departing Edison at 8:04 a.m. and arriving in New York at 8:50 a.m.

P.M. Peak

  • Train No. 3859 (two more cars) – departing New York at 4:20 p.m. and arriving in Trenton at 5:36 p.m.
  • Train No. 6431 (two more cars) – departing New York at 5:20 p.m. and arriving in Gladstone sat 6:52 p.m.
  • Train No. 3441 (two more cars) – departing New York at 6:53 p.m. and arriving in Aberdeen-Matawan at 7:55 p.m.
  • Train No. 3877 (two more cars) – departing New York at 7:14 p.m. and arriving in Trenton at 8:35 p.m.

Arrival and departure times for MidTOWN DIRECT service will remain the same. Arrival and departure times will change for many North Jersey Coast Line and Northeast Corridor trains (highlights are listed below). For more details, please review timetables, which will be available at stations, on the NJ TRANSIT website and distributed onboard trains.

Northeast Corridor weekday schedule reflecting most significant changes:

  • Train No. 3861, currently the 4:42 p.m. New York departure that arrives in Trenton at 6:08 p.m., will now depart New York at 4:37 p.m., stop at Newark five minutes earlier at 4:52 p.m. and Newark Liberty International Airport Station three minutes earlier at 4:59 p.m., then make stops to Trenton one to two minutes earlier, arriving in Trenton at 6:06 p.m.
  • Train No. 3725, currently the 5:12 p.m. New York departure that arrives at Jersey Avenue at 6:07 p.m., will now depart New York at 5:07 p.m. and make stops five to six minutes earlier, arriving at Jersey Avenue at 6:01 p.m.
  • Train No. 3865, currently the 5:24 p.m. New York departure that arrives in Trenton at 6:41 p.m., will now depart New York at 5:21 p.m. and make stops three minutes earlier, arriving in Trenton at 6:38 p.m.
  • Amtrak Clocker Train No. 627, which also cross-honors NJ TRANSIT monthly and weekly passes, will depart New York two minutes earlier at 5:13 p.m. and make stops two minutes earlier.
  • Amtrak Clocker Train No. 629, which cross-honors NJ TRANSIT monthly and weekly passes, will depart New York nine minutes earlier at 5:33 p.m. and make stops 11 minutes earlier, arriving in Trenton at 6:40 p.m.
  • Train No. 3815, the 5:52 a.m. New York departure that arrives in Trenton at 7:19 a.m., will cross-honor Amtrak monthly passes for passengers traveling between New Brunswick and Trenton.

North Jersey Coast Line weekday schedule reflecting most significant changes:

  • Train No. 3267, currently the 5:27 p.m. New York departure that arrives in Long Branch at 6:42 p.m., will now depart New York at 5:24 p.m. and make stops three minutes earlier, arriving in Long Branch at 6:39 p.m.
  • Train No. 3509, currently the 5:30 p.m. New York departure that arrives in South Amboy at 6:28 p.m., will now depart New York at 5:27 p.m. and make stops three minutes earlier, arriving in South Amboy at 6:25 p.m.
  • Train No. 3269, currently the 5:33 p.m. New York departure that arrives in Long Branch at 6:51 p.m., will now depart New York at 5:30 p.m. and make stops three minutes earlier, arriving in Long Branch at 6:48 p.m.
