LIGHTING AND EFFICIENCY UPGRADES

NJ TRANSIT is improving it operations to reduce energy and increase efficiency by leveraging state programs and implementing smart technology. NJ TRANSIT participates in New Jersey’s Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Local Government Energy Audit (LGEA) to identify energy efficient cost savings and improve the health and productivity of building occupants. Through the LGEA Program, NJ TRANSIT has completed audits at 13 of its facilities and plans to submit applications for more facilities.

NJ TRANSIT participates in the BPU’s Large Energy User Program (LEUP). Through this program lighting upgrades were installed at Meadows Maintenance Complex (MMC) located in Kearny, NJ. The safety and reliability of NJ TRANSIT'S rail fleet depends largely on the work that occurs at the MMC. Repair and maintenance inspections work take place in several buildings and its yard can store up to 60 locomotives, 50 cab cars, and 200 coaches. The new lights are 451 intelligent LED fixtures that have built-in occupancy and day-light sensors, wireless networking, and integrated controls. The updated lighting has dramatically increased lighting and visibility in vital work areas and the sensors and controls have curbed energy use by 68%.

Other notable lighting projects include upgrades at:
•    Newark Bus Complex
•    Headquarters
