NJ TRANSIT Welcomes Starbucks to Newark Penn Station
Coffee Shop Brings Amenities to NJ TRANSIT Customers and Supports Efforts to Expand Non-Farebox Revenue for the Agency
NJ TRANSIT is pleased to announce the opening of a new Starbucks in Newark Penn Station’s Main Concourse today, bringing specialty coffees and foods to its rail, bus and light rail customers. Starbucks will be serving customers seven days a week starting at 5:30 a.m. and into the evening hours until 9:00 p.m. during the week. Weekend hours begin at 6:00 a.m.
“We are very pleased to welcome Starbucks to Newark Penn Station and look forward to a long and beneficial partnership with them,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin Corbett. “Non-fare box, revenue generating opportunities like this are critical to securing the funding to put NJ TRANSIT back into national prominence while keeping ticket prices stable."
In August 2018, NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors approved the lease of more than 1,000 square feet of retail space in Newark Penn Station to Starbucks Corporation. The agreement will provide more than $1.6 million in non-farebox revenue to NJ TRANSIT over the 10-year lease. While providing an additional revenue stream to NJ TRANSIT, customers will enjoy convenience of the nationally recognized brand in Newark Penn Station.
In preparation for the opening of the new location, the first at a NJ TRANSIT property, Starbucks has also made approximately $750,000 in leasehold improvements. The store’s inline design conforms to the station’s historic art-deco theme and welcomes customers with exposed brick, original to the station, wrapped in metal beams and a one-of-a-kind illuminated vertical branding sign, unique to Newark Penn Station. The industrial-themed look continues throughout the store with its sleek concrete floors, and custom black tile wall.
