NJ TRANSIT Restores Rail Service to PSNY after Amtrak Summer Repairs - Monday, September 9, 2019

Regular Service Restored on All Montclair-Boonton Midtown Direct Trains along with Other Quarterly Schedule Adjustments

Following the completion of Amtrak repair work at Penn Station New York (PSNY) from the summer, NJ TRANSIT has restored adjusted rail service into and out of New York City including all affected Montclair-Boonton Midtown Direct trains.  In addition, as part of regular rail schedule changes, other adjustments will be made throughout the system to enhance the customer experience, meet demand and accommodate critical infrastructure improvements.

In addition to the resumption of PSNY service, there are some minor adjustments made as part of NJ TRANSIT’s regular ridership analysis to provide better service for customers.


The following Montclair-Boonton (MOBO) Line trains that were diverted to Hoboken to accommodate the summer track rehabilitation program will resume operation to/from Penn Station New York.

  • Train 6206 arriving PSNY at 7:40 a.m.
  • Train 6210 arriving PSNY at 8:20 a.m.
  • Train 6214 arriving PSNY at 8:59 a.m.
  • Train 6216 arriving PSNY at 9:50 a.m.
  • Train 6263 departing PSNY at 4:50 p.m.
  • Train 6273 departing PSNY at 5:31 p.m.
  • Train 6279 departing PSNY at 6:10 p.m.
  • Train 6283 departing PSNY at 6:41 p.m.

All Morris & Essex (M&E) Midtown Direct trains that had stops temporarily added at East Orange or removed from Newark Broad Street Station during the Amtrak repairs will return to their normal stopping patterns.

In addition, adjustments have been made to M&E and Montclair-Boonton Line trains to coordinate with restored Montclair-Boonton Line Midtown Direct service, as well as planned Amtrak schedule changes.

Discounted Tickets & Passes Valid Through September 30

Discounted tickets and passes will be valid through September 30, 2019 and will no longer be accepted as of October 1, 2019.


Based on ridership and to accommodate customer requests, North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) trains 2602 in the morning and 2611 in the afternoon will continue to operate in/out of Hoboken rather than PSNY. This provides additional options for customers who choose to travel via Hoboken Terminal. Existing connections at Newark to/from PSNY trains will remain in place.

In response to customer feedback and increased ridership demand on the NJCL, weekend service will be introduced to Avenel station, with 21 stops each day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Weekday service will also be enhanced with 11 additional stops, primarily during midday and late evening hours.


Trains stopping at both Elizabeth and North Elizabeth stations will use the low-level platforms on select weekday late nights/early morning and select weekends to accommodate platform replacement work at Elizabeth Station this fall. When a platform at either station is low-leveling, the other direction’s platform will be used for level access to trains.

Customers who require level boarding or deboarding access at the Elizabeth or North Elizabeth stations during periods of low-levelling may need to travel to either Newark Airport or Linden, where they can transfer to the next train going back in the direction of a level platform. To make these turns easier, NJ TRANSIT is adding stops at North Elizabeth on regularly scheduled trains.

The four weekday trains adding North Elizabeth stops and their times will be:

  • New York-bound Train 3806 at 4:47 a.m.
  • New York-bound Train 3886 at 11:04 p.m.
  • New York-bound Train 3800 at 2:15 a.m.
  • Trenton-bound Train 3897 at 12:41 a.m.

The four weekend trains adding North Elizabeth stops will be:

  • New York-bound Train 7876 at 12:02 a.m.
  • New York-bound Train 7800 at 2:15 a.m.
  • Trenton-bound Train 7813 at 5:37 a.m.
  • Trenton-bound Train 7887 at 12:41 a.m.


To reduce a late-afternoon gap in weekend service, an additional round trip will operate on the Princeton Shuttle (Dinky) between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
