The New Jersey Historical Society is a statewide, private, non-profit historical museum, library, and archive dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the rich and intricate political, social, cultural and economic history of New Jersey to the broadest possible audiences. Founded in 1845, we are the oldest cultural institution in the state. Through exhibitions, publications, and programming, we examine who and what we are, what it means to live and work in New Jersey, what contributes to New Jersey's distinct identity, and what unique contributions New Jerseyans make to the region and the country.

Through the history of New Jersey - a quintessentially American place - the Historical Society promotes exploration of cultures, past and present. As we challenge and inspire people to grow as learners and thinkers, we strive to make a difference in their lives.

Membership at The New Jersey Historical Society opens up a whole new world of discovery - exciting interactive exhibitions, an extensive library for scholarly and genealogical research, a world-class archival and museum collection, thought-provoking forums and discussion, and multi-purpose learning facilities for people of all ages.

Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens: Opening April 24, 2008, Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens traces the visual appeal of vegetable gardens across centuries and cultures.

Come learn the role that vegetable gardening has played in shaping the history, culture and economy of New Jersey, and discover why New Jersey is known as the Garden State.

"Feast Your Eyes: The Unexpected Beauty of Vegetable Gardens" was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Horticulture Services Division in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service(SITES). The companion exhibition was developed by The New Jersey Historical Society in collaboration with the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Funding for this exhibition was provided in part by the Smithsonian Institution, MetLife Foundation, Whole Foods Market, and NJAES.

What's Going On? Newark and the Legacy of the Sixties: What's Going On? Newark and the Legacy of the Sixties examines the social forces that led to the outbreak of urban rebellion in 1967 and the lasting impact on the people, landscape, institutions and economy of the region. Through photographs, artifacts, period media and oral histories, discover the diverse stories of how and why Newark - and the nation - changed in the 1960's and the struggle for renewal and rebirth since that time. Supported in part with funding from PSE&G; Prudential Foundation; Victoria Foundation, Inc.; JPMorgan Chase; Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; Jockey Hollow Foundation; Investors Savings Bank's Charitable Foundation; Essex County Building and Trade Association; Charles Emil Thenen Foundation; and the New Jersey Historical Commission, a Division of the Department of State. This exhibition was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations in this exhibition do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

Ebb and Flow: New Jersey and Its Rivers: The exhibit explores how activities, both historical and contemporary, along the Delaware, the Raritan, the Maurice and the Passaic - symbolize the importance of fresh waterways, and serve as a template for understanding rivers' importance in shaping the human experience. Using these waterways as well as two related canals as examples, Ebb and Flow will specifically explore the topics of food supply, settlement, transportation and industry.
Hands-on activities allow visitors to "dredge" for oysters, create a dutch-style tile, listen to excerpts from canal and oyster boat songs, and solve puzzles about the state's industries.
