NJ TRANSIT PROVIDES ENHANCED SERVICE FOR NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY

Late Night, Early Morning Service Available on New Year’s Day

NJ TRANSIT will provide enhanced rail, light rail and bus service for travelers during the New Year’s weekend, providing a convenient and safe trip for the holidays.

Customers are reminded to purchase their tickets in advance before boarding a train, bus or light rail vehicle. Newark City Subway and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail customers must also validate their tickets before riding.

As an added convenience NJ TRANSIT will extend its Weekend Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and under to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Monday, December 30 until 6 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2003. Senior citizen and round-trip excursion tickets will be valid without restriction throughout the period.

Following is a summary of the service planned by NJ TRANSIT for the upcoming holiday weekend.

NEW YEAR’S EVE, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31

Trains will operate on weekday schedules, with additional service as noted below.

Buses will follow a weekday schedule. Additional service will be provided from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) during the early afternoon hours and to the PABT in the early evening. Selected routes will provide additional service. Details are listed below. Customers should also check special service notices, the special bus holiday travel brochure — available at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Newark Penn Station and other major bus terminals — or NJ TRANSIT’s website, www.njtransit.com, for exact information.

The Newark City Subway will operate a weekday schedule.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate a special schedule, with reduced morning peak period service, additional evening and late night service and extended hours of operation until 3 a.m. New Year’s Day.

To accommodate increased travel, ticket offices at Penn Station New York and Hoboken Terminal will be open until 2 a.m. New Year’s Day. Ticket offices at the Port Authority Bus Terminal will remain open all night. Customers shouldpurchase round-trip bus or rail tickets to save time on their return trips. Customers using Hudson-Bergen Light Rail or the Newark City Subway must validate their tickets before boarding.

Early getaway trains and/or trains making extra station stops include:

BERGEN COUNTY/MAIN LINES

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken via the Main Line at 1 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 1:55 p.m.
  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken via the Bergen County Line at 1:50 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 2:39 p.m.
  • Regularly scheduled trains departing Hoboken at 4:57 p.m. (train 1257), 5:24 p.m. (train 1259) and 5:56 p.m. (train 1261) will be extended to make all station stops between Harmon Cove and Suffern.
  • An extra train will depart Ridgewood at 6:25 p.m. making stops at Radburn, Rutherford and Harmon Cove before arriving at Hoboken at 7:04 p.m.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 4:54 p.m. (train 1159), 5:21 p.m. (train 1161) and 5:50 p.m. (train 1163) WILL NOT operate.

NORTHEAST CORRIDOR

  • An early getaway train will depart New York at 1:54 p.m., make stops at Newark Penn and Newark International Airport stations, operate express to Metropark, then make all stops to Trenton, except Jersey Avenue. It will arrive in Trenton at 3:09 p.m.

NORTH JERSEY COAST LINE

  • An early getaway train will depart Newark at 3:45 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all local stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 5:40 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:26 p.m.)

PASCACK VALLEY LINE

  • Early getaway trains will depart Hoboken at 1:32 p.m. and 3:35 p.m., making all stops to Spring Valley. To accommodate this additional service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 5:03 p.m. (train 1605), 5:29 p.m. (train 1607) and 6:02 p.m. (train 1611) WILL NOT operate.

PORT JERVIS LINE

  • The 1:20 p.m. departure from Hoboken (train 53) will be extended beyond Middletown, NY to Otisville, NY and Port Jervis, NY. This train WILL NOT stop at Ridgewood and Ramsey. Arrival time in Port Jervis is 3:30 p.m.
  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:50 p.m. and make all station stops between Allendale, NJ and Port Jervis, NY. Arrival time at Port Jervis is 5:06 p.m:
  • An additional train will depart will depart Port Jervis at 4:18 p.m., arriving in Hoboken at 7:07 p.m.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, the 3:25 p.m. departure from Middletown, NY (train 62) and the 5:16 p.m. (train 59) and 6:23 p.m. (train 63) departures from Hoboken WILL NOT operate.

RARITAN VALLEY LINE

  • Train 5425, the 1:06 p.m. departure from Newark to Raritan will be extended, serving all stations between Raritan and High Bridge. This train arrives in High Bridge at 2:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 12:43 p.m.)
  • An early getaway train leaves Newark Penn Station at 3:32 p.m. and makes all stops to Raritan except Finderne. The train arrives in Raritan at 4:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:08 p.m.)
  • To accommodate early getaway and extended service, two early evening trains — the 6:23 p.m. High Bridge express (train 5711) and the 6:29 p.m. Plainfield local (train 5903) — will be combined. The combined train will depart Newark at 6:29 p.m. and make all stops to High Bridge.

Early afternoon getaway bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal between 12 noon and 4 p.m. Some routes will operate on an “as needed” basis:

  • No. 116 Perth Amboy-New York
  • No. 126 Hoboken-New York
  • No. 133 Old Bridge-Aberdeen-New York
  • No. 137 Toms River-New York (including express service)
  • No. 138 East Brunswick-New York
  • No. 139 Lakewood-Old Bridge-New York
  • No. 156 Englewood Cliffs-New York
  • No. 159 Fort Lee-New York
  • No. 160 Elmwood Park-New York
  • No. 162 Maywood-New York
  • No. 164 Midland Park-New York (including express service)
  • No. 165 Westwood-New York (express service)
  • No. 166 Dumont-Tenafly-New York (express service)
  • No. 168 Paramus-New York
  • No. 190 Paterson-New York (express service)
  • No. 194 Newfoundland-New York
  • No. 195 Clifton-Cedar Grove-New York
  • No. 196 Warwick-New York
  • No. 320 North Bergen Park/Ride-New York

The following Park/Rides will provide regularly scheduled bus service to New York City between 6 p.m. and midnight for the customers wishing to attend the evenings festivities: Allwood Park/Ride, Howell Park/Ride, North Bergen Park/Ride, Old Bridge Park/Ride, Ringwood Park/Ride, Vince Lombardi Park/Ride (until 8 p.m. only) and Willowbrook Park/Ride.

After 10 p.m., all buses departing the PABT will leave from the Upper Bus Level and New Annex Gates. Customers should check the special Holiday Bus Service brochure and service notices carefully to determine their correct boarding location.

NEW YEAR’S DAY, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2003

Trains will be on a Sunday schedule, with extra early morning service (see below).

Most buses will be on a Sunday schedule, with extra early morning service (see below). Some lines in Bergen and Passaic counties will follow a Saturday schedule. Customers should check their timetables.

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will follow a weekend schedule.

The Newark City Subway will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Additional early morning rail service will be provided on the following lines:

An additional Atlantic City Line train will depart Atlantic City at 1:30 a.m. and make all stops to Cherry Hill, where it will arrive at 2:31 a.m.

Three additional Bergen County Line trains will depart Hoboken at 1:05 a.m., 2:05 a.m., and 3:05 a.m., making all stops to Suffern.

Four additional Gladstone Branch trains will depart Hoboken at 12:40 a.m., 1:40 a.m., 2:40 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. and make all station stops to Gladstone.

Two additional Main Line trains will depart Hoboken at 1:45 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. and make all station stops to Suffern except Delawanna.

An additional Port Jervis train will depart Hoboken at 1:35 a.m. with its first stop at Suffern. An extra train will depart Hoboken at 2:45 a.m. and make all Main Line and Port Jervis Line station stops except Delawanna.

Four additional MidTOWN DIRECT trains will depart New York at 12:50 a.m., 1:50 a.m., 2:50 a.m. and 3:50 a.m., making all station stops to Dover except East Orange, Highland Avenue and Mountain Station. Gladstone-bound passengers traveling on MidTOWN DIRECT from New York can connect with Gladstone Branch trains at Summit.

Five additional Northeast Corridor trains will depart New York at 12:53 a.m., 1:15 a.m., 2:15 a.m., 3:15 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., making all station stops to Trenton except Newark International Airport, North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue. Two additional Northeast Corridor trains will depart Trenton at 2:30 a.m. and 3:50 a.m., making all station stops to New York except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue.

Two additional North Jersey Coast Line trains will depart New York at 2:01 a.m. and 4:21 a.m., making all stops to Long Branch except Newark International Airport, North Elizabeth and Avenel. Connecting Bay Head shuttle trains departing Long Branch at 3:30 a.m. and 5:50 a.m.

An additional Raritan Valley Line train will depart Newark Penn Station at 2:04 a.m. and make all station stops to Raritan except Garwood. Another Raritan Valley Line train will depart Newark Penn Station at 4:40 a.m. and make all station stops to Raritan, including Garwood.

Additional early morning bus service between 12:00 a.m. and 5:59 a.m. will be provided on the following lines. For information on the latest trip departing New York for each of these lines click here:

Until 6 a.m., all buses departing the PABT will leave from the Upper Bus Level and New Annex Gates. Customers should check the supplemental service brochure carefully to determine their correct boarding location.

Customers should be advised that while they will be allowed to enter the PABT building after midnight, only customers with a valid ticket will have access to buses departing New York via PABT gates.
