NJ TRANSIT PROVIDES ENHANCED SERVICE FOR NEW YEAR’S HOLIDAY

Late Night, Early Morning Service Available on New Year’s Day

NEWARK, NJ, December 26, 2001 -- NJ TRANSIT will provide enhanced rail, light rail and bus service for travelers during the New Year’s weekend, providing a fun and safe trip for the holidays.

Customers are reminded to purchase their tickets in advance before boarding a train, bus or light rail vehicle. Newark City Subway and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail customers must also validate their tickets before riding.

Following is a summary of the service planned by NJ TRANSIT for the upcoming holiday weekend.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 28

  • Buses and trains are on regular weekday schedules, with getaway service available on some lines (details listed below).
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail and the Newark City Subway are on a regular weekday schedule.

Early getaway trains include:

Boonton Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:30 p.m. and make all stops to Montclair Heights, where it will arrive at 2:06 p.m.

Montclair Branch

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:30 p.m. and make all stops to Bay Street, where it will arrive at 3:02 p.m.

North Jersey Coast Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Newark at 3:49 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all local stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 5:44 p.m. (A connecting train leaves Penn Station New York at 3:30 p.m.)

Early getaway bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT):

NJ TRANSIT will provide additional bus service from the PABT between 12 noon and 4 p.m. as customer demand warrants.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29 and SUNDAY, DECEMBER 30

  • Buses, trains and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail are on regular weekend schedules.
  • The Newark City Subway will not operate as construction continues on a future extension of the system. Substitute bus service will be provided according to regular schedules.

NEW YEAR'S EVE, MONDAY, DECEMBER 31

  • Trains will operate on weekday schedules, with additional service as noted below.
  • Buses will follow weekday, holiday or Saturday schedules, depending on the line. Additional service will be provided from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) during the early afternoon hours and to the PABT in the early evening. Some routes will not operate. Details are listed below. Customers should also check special service notices, the special bus holiday travel brochure — available at the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Newark Penn Station and other major bus terminals — or NJ TRANSIT’s website, www.njtransit.com, for exact information.
  • The Newark City Subway will operate a modified weekday schedule, with service every eight minutes during both peak periods and midday hours.
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will operate a special schedule, with reduced morning peak period service, additional evening and late night service and extended hours of operation until 3 a.m. New Year’s Day.

To accommodate increased travel, ticket offices at Penn Station New York and Hoboken Terminal will be open until 2 a.m. New Year’s Day. Ticket offices at the Port Authority Bus Terminal will remain open all night. Customers should purchase round-trip bus or rail tickets to save time on their return trips. Customers using Hudson-Bergen Light Rail or the Newark City Subway should also validate their tickets before boarding.

Additional rail service includes:

Bergen County Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:50 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 2:39 p.m.
  • Additional eastbound trains will depart Ridgewood at 4:28 p.m. and at 6:25 p.m. They will stop at Radburn, Rutherford and Harmon Cove and arrive in Hoboken at 5:12 p.m. and 7:04 p.m., respectively.
  • Regularly scheduled trains departing Hoboken at 4:57 p.m. (train 1257), 5:24 p.m. (train 1259) and 5:57 p.m. (train 1261) will be extended to make all station stops between Harmon Cove and Suffern.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 4:54 p.m. (train 1159), 5:21 p.m. (train 1161) and 5:50 p.m. (train 1163) WILL NOT operate.

Boonton Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1:30 p.m. and make all stops to Montclair Heights, where it will arrive at 2:06 p.m.

Main Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 1 p.m. and make all stops to Waldwick, where it will arrive at 1:55 p.m.

Montclair Branch

  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:30 p.m. and make all stops to Bay Street, where it will arrive at 3:02 p.m.

Northeast Corridor

  • An early getaway train will depart New York at 1:54 p.m., make stops at Newark Penn and Newark International Airport stations, operate express to Metropark, then make all stops to Trenton. It will arrive in Trenton at 3:09 p.m.

North Jersey Coast Line

  • An early getaway train will depart Newark at 3:49 p.m., operate express to Woodbridge, then make all local stops to Bay Head, where it will arrive at 5:44 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:30 p.m.)

Pascack Valley Line

  • Early getaway trains will depart Hoboken at 1:32 p.m. and 3:35 p.m., making all stops to Spring Valley.
  • To accommodate this additional service, trains that normally depart Hoboken at 5:07 p.m. (train 1605), 5:28 p.m. (train 1607) and 6:04 p.m. (train 1611) WILL NOT operate.

Port Jervis Line

  • The 1:20 p.m. departure from Hoboken (train 53) will be extended beyond Middletown, NY to Otisville, NY and Port Jervis, NY. This train WILL NOT stop at Ridgewood or Ramsey. Arrival time in Port Jervis is 3:30 p.m.
  • An early getaway train will depart Hoboken at 2:50 p.m. and make all station stops between Allendale, NJ and Port Jervis, NY. Arrival time at Port Jervis is 5:06 p.m.
  • To accommodate the extended and early getaway service, the 3:25 p.m. departure from Middletown, NY (train 62) and the 5:16 p.m. (train 59) and 6:23 p.m. (train 63) departures from Hoboken WILL NOT operate.

Raritan Valley Line

  • Train 5425, the 1:06 p.m. departure from Newark to Raritan will be extended, serving all stations between Raritan and High Bridge. This train arrives in High Bridge at 2:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 12:43 p.m.)
  • An early getaway train leaves Newark Penn Station at 3:32 p.m. and makes all stops to Raritan except Finderne. The train arrives in Raritan at 4:29 p.m. (A connecting NJ TRANSIT train leaves New York at 3:07 p.m.)
  • To accommodate early getaway and extended service, two early evening trains — the 6:23 p.m. High Bridge express (train 5711) and the 6:29 p.m. Plainfield local (train 5903) — will be combined. The combined train will depart Newark at 6:29 p.m. and make all stops to High Bridge.

Early afternoon getaway bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal:

NJ TRANSIT will provide early getaway service on the following commuter services between 12 noon and 4 p.m.

  • No. 113 Dunellen-New York (Parkway Express)
  • No. 114 Somerville-New York
  • No. 116 Perth Amboy-New York
  • No. 126 Hoboken-New York
  • No. 131 Sayreville-New York
  • No. 133 Old Bridge-Aberdeen-New York

  • No. 137 Toms River-New York (including express service)
  • No. 138 East Brunswick-New York

  • No. 321 Vince Lombardi Park/Ride-New York (customers who normally use this route should use the No. 320 North Bergen Park/Ride-New York route)
  • No. 604 East Trenton-Trenton Rail Station
  • No. 611 Perry Street Park/Ride Shuttle

Additional bus service to the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) will be provided between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on the following routes:

  • No. 165 Westwood-New York
  • No. 166 Dumont-Tenafly-New York
  • No. 190 Paterson-New York

The Allwood, North Bergen and Willowbrook Park/Rides will have extra bus service available. After 10 p.m., all buses departing the PABT will leave from the Upper Bus Level and New Annex Gates. Customers should check the special Holiday Bus Service brochure and service notices carefully to determine their correct boarding location.

NEW YEAR'S DAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 1, 2002

  • Trains will be on a Sunday schedule, with extra early morning service (see below).
  • Most buses will be on a Sunday schedule, with extra early morning service (see below). Some lines in Bergen and Passaic counties will follow a Saturday schedule. Customers should check their timetables.
  • Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will follow a weekend schedule.
  • The Newark City Subway will operate on a special schedule. Light rail service will be available every 20 minutes from about 6 a.m. until about 9:30 p.m. and every 30-40 minutes at other times.

Additional early morning rail service will be provided on the following lines:

  • An additional Atlantic City Line train will depart Atlantic City at 1:30 a.m. and make all stops to Cherry Hill, where it will arrive at 2:31 a.m.
  • Three additional Bergen County Line trains will depart Hoboken at 1:05 a.m., 2:05 a.m., and 3:05 a.m., making all stops to Suffern.
  • Four additional Gladstone Branch trains will depart Hoboken at 12:40 a.m., 1:40 a.m., 2:40 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. and make all station stops to Gladstone.
  • Two additional Main Line trains will depart Hoboken at 1:45 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. and make all station stops to Suffern except Delawanna.
  • An extra train will depart Hoboken at 2:45 a.m. and make all Main Line and Port Jervis Line station stops except Delawanna.
  • Four additional MidTOWN DIRECT trains will depart New York at 12:50 a.m., 1:50 a.m., 2:50 a.m. and 3:50 a.m., making all station stops to Dover except East Orange, Highland Avenue and Mountain Station. Gladstone-bound passengers traveling on MidTOWN DIRECT from New York can connect with Gladstone Branch trains at Summit.
  • Five additional Northeast Corridor trains will depart New York at 12:54 a.m., 1:16 a.m., 2:16 a.m., 3:16 a.m. and 4:16 a.m., making all station stops to Trenton except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue. Two additional Northeast Corridor trains will depart Trenton at 2:30 a.m. and 3:50 a.m., making all station stops to New York except North Elizabeth and Jersey Avenue.
  • Two additional North Jersey Coast Line trains will depart New York at 2:01 a.m. and 4:21 a.m., making all stops to Long Branch except Avenel. Connecting Bay Head shuttle trains departing Long Branch at 3:30 a.m. and 5:50 a.m.
  • An additional Raritan Valley Line train will depart Newark Penn Station at 2:04 a.m. and make all station stops to Raritan except Garwood. Another Raritan Valley Line train will depart Newark Penn Station at 4:40 a.m. and make all station stops to Raritan, including Garwood.

Additional early morning bus service between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m. will be provided on the following lines:

  • No. 107 Irvington-Ivy Hill-New York
  • No. 108 Newark-New York
  • No. 112 Clark-New York
  • No. 113 Dunellen-New York (via North Avenue)
  • No. 114 Somerville-New York
  • No. 116 Perth Amboy-New York

  • No. 125 Journal Square-New York

Until 6 a.m., all buses departing the PABT will leave from the Upper Bus Level and New Annex Gates. Customers should check the supplemental service brochure carefully to determine their correct boarding location.

The statewide transit agency's bus and rail Weekend Family Super Saver Fare, which allows two children 11 and under to travel free with each fare-paying adult, will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, December 28 until 6 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002. Senior citizen and round-trip excursion tickets will be valid without restriction throughout the period.
