Miss America Contestants to Arrive by Train in Atlantic City During Try Transit Week Celebration

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, September 6, 2001 -- On September 22, the new Miss America will be crowned before she takes the traditional walk down the runway. But she’ll begin her two-week road to the crown when she arrives in Atlantic City on a NJ TRANSIT Atlantic City Line train on Monday, September 10.

All 51 contestants will help NJ TRANSIT celebrate Try Transit Week by boarding the train at Amtrak’s 30th Street Station in Philadelphia at 9 a.m. The train will arrive in Atlantic City at 10:30 a.m. At 30th Street Station, a Dixieland band will entertain contestants as they board the train. NJ TRANSIT Board Member Flora Castillo and NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Jeffrey A. Warsh will join the contestants for a photo opportunity when the train arrives in Atlantic City, where the entourage will also be greeted by the Atlantic City High School band.

Board Member Castillo and Executive Director Warsh will board the train and be available for interviews at 30th Street Station.

Media wishing to ride the train between Philadelphia and Atlantic City may do so; however, the contestants will not be available for interviews or photographs while aboard the train. Brief interviews and photographs will be permitted at 30th Street Station. Media members wishing to ride on this special NJ TRANSIT train should call Michael Klufas at 973-491-7081 or 973-268-0549 during the weekend.

Media wishing to attend the departure from 30th Street Station at 9:15 a.m. should arrive by 8:45 a.m., park on the Market Street side of the station and proceed to track 2 from the main waiting room. Media wishing to capture the arrival of the train in Atlantic City at 10:30 a.m. should arrive at the rail terminal by 10 a.m.

DIRECTIONS TO THE ATLANTIC CITY RAIL TERMINAL

  • Take the Garden State Parkway South to exit 38 to the Atlantic City Expressway east.
  • At the second traffic light off the end of the Expressway make a left onto Arctic Avenue.
  • Go two blocks and make a left onto Michigan Avenue.
  • Michigan Avenue will take you directly into the Atlantic City Convention Center parking garage.
  • Inform parking attendant that you are going to the Rail Terminal and they will direct you to your parking location.
