MULTILEVEL RAIL COACH PROCUREMENT

Project Scope:

The project involves the purchase of an additional 100 multilevel passenger coaches and spare parts for use throughout the NJ TRANSIT commuter rail system.  The new vehicles will continue to replace the aging Comet fleet

Project Cost:

Approximately $330,000,000.

Schedule:

Anticipated delivery date of first vehicle – Summer 2012

Anticipated delivery date of 100th vehicle – Summer 2013

Benefits:

The vehicles are equipped with 2/2 fixed seating, indirect lighting, wide aisles and larger vestibules to provide ease of boarding.  They can offer as much as 20% more seating than is available on the vehicles they replace.  And, their ability to increase passenger capacity does not come with a commensurate increase in infrastructure, such as longer platforms.  The procurement of these additional 100 vehicles is part of a process that began with the first multilevels acquired in 2003.
