Proof-Of-Payment
The Newark Light Rail operates a "Proof of Payment" fare collection system. This policy requires that you have a time-stamped ticket prior to boarding subway cars and retain your ticket until you exit the subway station.
Buy It
You are required to have a time-stamped ticket or a monthly pass before boarding. You may use any of the following options to buy tickets.
Time-Stamp It
All One-way, Transfer, Continuing and Ten-Trip tickets purchased from TVMs must be stamped in a Validation Machine before boarding Newark Light Rail cars. Monthly Passes do not need to be time-stamped. Validation Machines are located next to TVMs on platforms at each station.
To stamp your ticket, insert it into the Validation Machine with the print side up and NJ TRANSIT's logo facing to the left. The machine will place an expiration time stamp on the ticket. Your ticket will then be valid until the expiration time which appears on the ticket. (Tickets are valid for 45 minutes.)
Ride It
Once you have a time-stamped ticket, all that's left to do is get on board the Newark Light Rail and enjoy the ride.
NJ TRANSIT Fare Inspectors will make random ticket inspections on platforms where you board, on the cars while you ride and while you are leaving subway stations. Remember to keep your ticket handy as you may be asked to show it more than once during your trip.
If you are a senior citizen or a passenger with a disability and present a reduced fare senior citizen/disabled ticket, you must provide a valid ID upon request. See "Reduced Fare Program" below for valid IDs.
If you do not have a valid ticket, you will be subject to fines up to $100 pursuant to NJAC 16:87-3.1, and repeat offenders may be subject to criminal theft of service charges. Transfer and Continuing Trip Tickets must be retained for travel on your connecting bus.
Newark Light Rail Tickets and Passes
Monthly Passes
Monthly passes are discounted, and the more you ride the greater the discount. Passes are valid for unlimited trips up to the number of zones printed on the face of the pass. Subway monthly passes are valid for one-zone free transportation on local bus routes operated by NJ TRANSIT and private local bus routes operated by carriers operating under an NJ TRANSIT Bus Monthly Pass Agreement. Rail monthly passes printed with 1 zone or greater may be used for travel on NLR. Please note that monthly passes do not need to be time-stamped.
Ten-Trip Tickets
Ten-Trip discounted ticket packages consist of 10 individual single-use tickets valid for up to 20 days from the date of sale. They save you about 15 percent off the cost of regular one-way fares. Each ticket should be time-stamped individually prior to riding.
Family Supersaver Fares
On weekends and holidays from 7 PM Friday (or the day before a holiday) until 6 AM Monday (or the day after a holiday), two children ages 5 through 11 may travel free with a passenger paying any valid fare.
Children's Fares
Children ages 5 through 11 save 50 percent or more from regular one-way fares at all times. Up to three children ages 4 and under ride free when accompanied by a passenger paying any valid fare.
Student Tickets
Students who reside in New Jersey and attend elementary or secondary school (through 12th grade) located in New Jersey may travel at a 33 percent discount off adult one-way and transfer fares. Since student tickets may not be purchased from the TVMs, students must buy their tickets from NJ TRANSIT garages (most garages sell them) and major terminals or obtain them from their school prior to travel. When purchasing their one-way tickets prior to boarding, students must present a properly completed NJ TRANSIT Student Identification card issued by appropriate school authorities. Student tickets are valid 24 hours daily, for travel to and from all Newark Light Rail stations. (This does not include school field trips which leave the school with supervisory personnel.) These tickets are for the personal use of the student who purchased them or received them from the school he/she attends. When requested, a student must present a properly completed NJ TRANSIT Student Identification Card for examination by Fare Enforcement Officers or other representatives of NJ TRANSIT.
Student Monthly Passes
Students who attend post-secondary schools that participate in our University Partnership Program may purchase monthly student passes online and save 25-percent off regular monthly pass fares. Click here for a list of participating institutions and details on how to become a partner.
