REMINDER: Raritan Valley Line: Buses Replace Trains between Cranford and Newark Penn and Union and Newark Penn due to Amtrak & Conrail Maintenance Work - September 15-17, 2017

Beginning Friday evening September 15 and continuing through Sunday, September 17, Amtrak and Conrail will perform maintenance work near Newark Penn Station affecting Raritan Valley Line (RVL) service as follows:

  • Between Cranford and Newark Penn stations on the Raritan Valley Line:
    • Buses will replace trains between Cranford and Newark Penn stations Friday evenings from approximately 10 pm to 1:30 a.m. (end of service).
  • Between Union and Newark Penn stations on the Raritan Valley Line:
    • Buses will replace trains between Union and Newark Penn stations all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

Please NOTE: Special shuttle trains will operate from Newark to New York (with a stop at Secaucus) to support customers transferring from RVL substitute buses at Newark. These trains are scheduled to depart Newark approximately 10 minutes after the buses arrive. Still, customers should allow up to 60 minutes added travel time due to ongoing Amtrak work. Please allow extra travel time.

                                                    AFFECTED TRAINS

Friday, September 15 - View schedules HERE.   

  • Train 5154 (8:49 p.m. from Raritan) will terminate at Cranford
  • Train 5156 (9:53 p.m. from Raritan) will terminate at Cranford
  • Train 5458 (11:38 p.m. from Raritan) will terminate at Cranford
  • Train 5197 (11:06 p.m. New York departure) will not operate from New York. Customers should take Northeast Corridor Train 3895 (departing New York at 11:06 p.m.) and change at Newark Penn Station for connecting bus service. Train 5197 will operate from Cranford.
  • Train 5101 (12:08 a.m. New York departure) will NOT operate from New York. Customers should take Northeast Corridor Train 3897 (departing New York at 12:14 a.m.) and change at Newark Pennfor connecting bus service. Train 5101 will operate from Cranford.
  • Train 5403 – 1:00 a.m./1:28 a.m. (New York/Newark) will originate from Cranford

  • All trains will operate between Raritan and Union stations only. Substitute bus service will operate between Union and Newark Penn stations. Special shuttle trains will operate between Newark and New York (with a stop at Secaucus) to support customers transferring from RVL substitute buses at Newark.

CUSTOMERS TRAVELING EASTBOUND

  • Customers traveling from Raritan to Garwood will board their regular trains.
  • On Friday nights, customers at Cranford, Roselle Park and Union will board buses to Newark Penn.
  • On Saturday and Sunday, customers at Cranford and Roselle Park will board trains,which will operate to Union Station. At Union Station, all customers will transfer to buses to Newark Penn Station. 
  • Buses will not depart until all customers have transferred from the train.
  • At Newark, customers continuing to Secaucus and New York should board the next available train. Customers may arrive at their final destination 45-60 minutes later than usual and if traveling via Secaucus, should plan their connections carefully as trains will not be held at Secaucus.

CUSTOMERS TRAVELING WESTBOUND

  • On Friday night, customers traveling from Newark Penn will board buses that will take them to Union Station, Roselle Park and Cranford. At Cranford, customers will transfer to the train. Trains will not depart until all buses have arrived and all customers have transferred.
  • On Saturdays and Sundays, customers traveling from Newark Penn will board busesto Union Station. At Union Station, customers will transfer to the train. Trains will not depart until all buses have arrived and all customers have transferred.
  • Customers traveling FROM New York or Secaucus will take connecting trains from those stationsand transfer to buses at NewarkPenn.
  • Buses will not depart Newark Penn Station until the connecting train from New York has arrived and all customers have transferred.
  • Train will not depart Cranford until all buses have arrived and all customers have transferred.
