Port Imperial Ferry Terminal

Background
NJ TRANSIT, Romulus Corp., and Port Imperial South, L.L.C. entered into an agreement for the construction and operation of a new ferry terminal in Weehawken, NJ in 2001. The project is one of five approved by the New Jersey Department of Transportation under the Public-Private Partnership Act of 1997. Under the agreement, the State of New Jersey will receive a lease fee from New York Waterway and Romulus Development Corporation based on the number of ferry passengers carried, in exchange for which NJ TRANSIT will build the terminal. The new terminal will be located to allow Hudson-Bergen Light Rail riders from Bergen and Hudson counties to transfer to ferries to New York. Local buses will also serve the terminal from the towers of Weehawken and West New York.
Project Scope
The project includes the construction of a new three-story facility to replace the existing undersized and aging terminal. The building will have two passenger levels with retail and waiting areas and a third floor for mechanical equipment. A portion of the second floor also includes crew facilities. The project includes ramps and floating docks and an 800-foot waterfront esplanade, providing scenic views of the Hudson and the Manhattan skyline. Provisions are incorporated for a future connection to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Weehawken Station, including a future external pedestrian bridge and an elevator.
Project Cost
$53 million. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, TTF and the Federal Transit Administration.
Current Status
Construction began in the spring of 2004 and is approximately 95% complete.
Next Milestone
It is anticipated that construction will be complete in the summer of 2006
Benefits
The ferry terminal will allow for the expansion of Trans-Hudson ferry service between New Jersey and New York, relieving significant traffic congestion and over crowded transit links.
