Bayhead Yard Improvements

Background
NJ TRANSIT is making a series of improvements to the Bay Head Yard to allow better inspections and cleaning of rail equipment and allow locomotives to be shut off during nighttime hours. A pedestal track will be constructed to facilitate disc brake inspections required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The access necessary for this work can only be achieved from beneath the trains. A new yard compressed air system will be installed to allow locomotives to be turned off during nighttime hours. Locomotives require considerable start-up time to fully pressurize their compressed air system internally.

Project Scope
Work includes the installation of a 950 foot pedestal track; an improved yard lighting system; an electrical substation and emergency generator; a compressed air system; a hot and cold water system; fuel tanks; head end power; lift stations and a holding tank. This is not a yard expansion project.

Project Cost
$16.8 million

Current Status
The project is currently underway.

Next Milestone
NJ TRANSIT expects improvements to be completed by March 2006.

Benefits
Once the improvements are complete, NJ TRANSIT will be able to comply with the more frequent inspections and servicing of disc braking systems required by the FRA. In addition, the improvements will allow locomotives to be shut down during nighttime hours, reducing emissions and noise pollution. Finally, cleaning of rail cars will be improved through the greater access to hot and cold water.
