Bayhead Yard Improvements Background NJ TRANSIT is making a series of improvements to the Bay Head Yard to allow better inspections and cleaning of rail equipment and allow locomotives to be shut off during nighttime hours. A pedestal track will be constructed to facilitate disc brake inspections required by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The access necessary for this work can only be achieved from beneath the trains. A new yard compressed air system will be installed to allow locomotives to be turned off during nighttime hours. Locomotives require considerable start-up time to fully pressurize their compressed air system internally.
