South Amboy Station Accessibility Improvements (Phase 1)

New Pedestrian Overpass and Plaza
Background
South Amboy is the fifth of nine stations to receive
accessibility improvements on the North Jersey Coast Line under this program.
Ridership at this station is over 1,000 daily customers. The existing
low-level platforms are located between Augusta and John streets. There
is an existing station building with a ticket office, waiting room, toilets
and concession area on the eastbound platform, located near the center
of town behind Broadway - the main commercial street. Pedestrians cross
from one side to the other by use of the existing overpass at Henry Street
and grade crossings at Augusta and John streets at either end of the platforms.
Project Scope (Phase 1)
Improvements will consist of a new 16-foot-wide pedestrian overpass
with two elevators, spanning from the existing eastbound commuter parking
lot to the new transit plaza on the westbound side fronting on Broadway,
including signage, lighting and landscaping.
Project Cost
Station Plaza West and pedestrian overpass: $7.5 million, funded by FTA
and TTF.
Current Status
Construction was completed in February 2005.
Next Milestone
None.
Benefits
Improved customer/pedestrian access across the tracks improves safety
and eliminates the need to use the existing grade crossing at Augusta
Street.
