Red Bank Historic Restoration And High Level Platform Project

Background
In conjunction with the Borough of Red Bank, NJ TRANSIT is designing a series of improvements to
protect the immediate and long-term conditions of this historic station and to improve internal customer
areas and prospective tenant spaces. Red Bank is also one of nine stations to receive high-level platforms on the North Jersey Coast Line. Red Bank is a key station for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance (see the "Rail System Improvements" section for more information on commuter rail accessibility and key stations) and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The existing low-level platforms are located between Monmouth and Chestnut streets with parking lots located on each side. Pedestrians cross from one side to the other via existing grade-crossings at Monmouth and Chestnut streets.
Project Scope - Phases 1 & 2
Phase 1 - The Red Bank Station Canopy Restoration project will demolish the existing canopy and replace it with an identical, historic canopy that will become part of the overall station renovation/restoration at a future date. Passenger protection will be provided by a temporary shelter until canopy replacement is complete.
Phase 2 - The high-level platform project
includes the construction of platforms on either side of tracks, with
shelters, canopies, and ADA compliant stairs and ramps. A passenger
amenities package includes installation of new signage and lighting.
The restoration will address the immediate and long-term needs of the deteriorating
structures. Work will be performed in conformity with the station's
status on State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Project Cost
Phase 1 - Station Building Canopy Construction: $1 million
Phase 2 - High-Level Platforms Construction: $9.4 million
Current Status
Phase 1 - Construction complete.
Phase 2 - Construction began in August of 2005.
Next Milestone
Phase 1 - Complete canopy construction in the spring of 2005.
Phase 2 - Construction 50% complete in January 2006.
Benefits
The high-level platforms will provide level passenger ingress and egress, safer boarding and shorter train dwell times. Passengers will wait beneath a new canopy with improved lighting and communications.
