M & E Station Improvement And Viaduct Rehabilitation

Background
The Morris & Essex station improvement and viaduct project encompasses the rehabilitation of the South Orange, East Orange and Brick Church rail stations and associated viaducts. After about 80 years of use, these historically significant stations and viaducts are in need of extensive structural repairs and waterproofing.
In addition, the South Orange and East Orange Stations are key stations under NJ TRANSIT's Commuter Rail Accessibility Plan (see the "Rail System Improvements" section for more information on commuter rail accessibility and key stations).
Project Scope
The project includes station rehabilitation and viaduct waterproofing at the South Orange,
Brick Church and East Orange stations. Mini high-level platforms and elevator accessibility
improvements are proposed at both the South Orange and East Orange stations.
Project Cost
$80 million (Estimate)
Current Status
Mini high-level platforms, elevators, and accessibility improvements are complete at both locations. Construction is currently ongoing to rehabilitate and waterproof the elevated viaduct sections at all 3 stations.
Next Milestone
Viaduct repairs and waterproofing are expected to be completed by the summer of 2006.
Benefits
The project will correct structural deterioration and extensive water leakage at viaduct
structures and station buildings in addition to providing the benefits of restored historically significant stations. Access to the stations for persons with disabilities will also be improved.
