Newark Light Rail Improvements

Background
Artist rendering of Branch Brook Park Station NJ TRANSIT's Newark Light Rail system has served Newark since 1935. Although various improvements have been made over the years, a 1996 system assessment by NJ TRANSIT indicated the need to upgrade the infrastructure. The project, nearing completion, includes a one-mile line extension to Belleville and Bloomfield, three new stations, a new maintenance facility and storage area, new 70 percent low-floor light rail vehicles and capital improvements along the existing line for ventilation and catenary power. Also, three existing stations are being made fully accessible. Click here to view a map of the system .
