Background

Public transportation takes many forms. From smaller shuttle bus service to commuter rail and light rail systems, each type of service requires a different demographic in order to be cost-effective. For example, densely populated areas can better support frequent light rail service than areas that are less densely populated.

NJ TRANSIT undertakes Capital Improvement Projects to serve the state's ever-changing population and to meet customers' needs. Projects are divided into two categories: Committed Projects are those that NJ TRANSIT is either constructing presently or is planning to construct. Candidate Projects are those being considered by the agency for future construction. It is important to note that all project construction is dependent on securing appropriate funding and that even committed projects have not been fully funded. In addition, planning is not a static exercise, but rather an ongoing process. The projects are subject to change as the strategic plan and demographics develop over time.
